The Confident Learner

Privacy

The short version

Reading this book does not tell us who you are.

There are no analytics, no advertising, no tracking scripts and no cookies of ours while you read. We do not keep a list of readers. The only time any personal information is involved is when you choose to sign in with Google to read Chapters 4 to 23, and even then we do not store it on our servers.

Reading the site

You can read the Prologue, Chapters 1 to 3 and the Appendix without signing in, and while you do, we learn nothing about you that we could tie back to a person.

  1. No cookies. The site sets none while you are only reading.
  2. No tracking or analytics. There is no Google Analytics, no pixel, and no code from any advertising or social network on these pages. Nothing records which chapters you read or how long you stay.
  3. Nothing loaded from elsewhere. The fonts, images and scripts all come from this site, so opening a page does not send your address to Google, Facebook or anyone else.

If you sign in with Google

The sign-in is there to keep out bots and scrapers, not to learn about you. When you sign in, Google tells us three things: your name, your email address and your profile photo. Nothing else. We never get access to your Gmail, Drive, contacts or anything else in your Google account.

What happens to those three things:

  1. They stay in your browser. They are kept in an encrypted cookie on your device, which only this site can read. We use them to unlock the chapters and to show your name at the top of the page. There is no database behind this site, so there is no copy of your details on our side.
  2. The cookie lasts until you sign out, or for 30 days, after which you simply sign in again. Two more short-lived cookies are used during sign-in itself: one guards against forged sign-in requests, and one remembers which page to bring you back to. Both are gone when you close your browser.
  3. Your photo comes from Google. It is loaded straight from Google's servers, so Google sees that request. We have set it up so your browser does not tell Google which page you were on.
  4. Google knows you signed in here. That part is between you and Google, under Google's privacy policy.

If you send us a note

Signed-in readers see a "Send a note to the author" link at the end of each chapter. It opens a Google Form with your name, email and the chapter already filled in, so opening it does pass those details to Google. Nothing reaches us unless you press submit. If you do, we receive what you wrote along with your name and email, and it sits in our Google account.

The same goes for email. If you write to [email protected], we have your message and your address.

We use these only to read what you said and, if it helps, reply or fix the book. We keep them while they are useful for that, and we will delete them if you ask. We will never add you to a mailing list or send you anything you did not ask for.

Who else is involved

Two companies, both because the site cannot work without them. Neither is paid with your data.

  1. Cloudflare. Every visit passes through Cloudflare on the way to our server, which is how the site stays fast and stays up. They see your IP address. Their bot check may set a short-lived cookie that only remembers the check passed.
  2. Google. Only if you sign in or send a note, as described above.

Both handle data outside India. We do not sell, rent or share anything about you for advertising, and we never will.

Like nearly every web server, ours may keep brief technical logs (an IP address, the page asked for and the time) to deal with attacks and faults. We do not use them to work out who is reading what.

What you can ask us to do

Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you can ask us to tell you what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. You can withdraw your consent at any time: sign out from the menu, and if you like, remove this site from your Google account under Your connections to third-party apps and services. Signing out deletes the sign-in cookie from your browser.

Write to [email protected] for anything else. It is read by people, not a ticket system, and we will reply within 30 days at no charge. You can also nominate someone to do this on your behalf. If we do not sort out your complaint, you can take it to the Data Protection Board of India.

Readers under 18

This book is written for college students and recent graduates, and the sign-in is meant for readers aged 18 and over. You do not need to sign in to read the Prologue, Chapters 1 to 3 or the Appendix. If you are under 18, please sign in only with a parent's or guardian's permission. If a parent or guardian wants anything deleted, write to us and we will do it.

If anything here changes, we will update this page and the date below. We will not quietly start collecting something new while the old wording stays up.
