The Confident Learner
Part A — The Tech FundamentalsChapter 14

AI and LLMs as a Fundamental — What These Systems Actually Are, What They Can and Cannot Do, and How to Think Clearly About Them

The thing that had been in every chapter

Every chapter of this book so far has ended with a section called the AI corner. You have read thirteen of them. In each one, an instruction kept repeating in different costumes. Use the tool to gather evidence, not to reach conclusions. Ask it what it did not think to tell you. Treat its confident story the way you treat your own first guess. The corner kept appearing because the technology kept being relevant to every layer of the stack, which is itself the most important fact about it and the reason this chapter exists.

This is the chapter the book has been deferring on purpose. Chapter 1 made a promise: that the book would not tell you AI was a fad, would not tell you AI was everything, and would tell you, plainly, what it is good at, what it is bad at, and what to learn regardless. It deferred the full conversation because you needed the fundamentals first. You cannot think clearly about what AI is augmenting until you understand the thing being augmented. Now you have thirteen chapters of that understanding. So now we can look straight at the technology that has been quietly rewriting the economics of everything in this book, and think about it the way an engineer should: mechanically, honestly, without awe and without contempt.

There is no opening story in someone's city this time. The story is the one you are living. You are learning to be an engineer in the exact years this technology changed what that means. That is the vignette. It is yours.
