The Five-Thing Map — Vocabulary, Actors, Money Flow, Regulatory Perimeter, Failure Modes

Ninety silent minutes

Ishita had been at the insurance company in Mumbai for exactly eleven days when she sat through the planning meeting that changed how she thought about learning.

The meeting was ninety minutes long. It involved four people from the claims team, two from underwriting, a compliance officer, and three engineers including Ishita. They were planning a new feature for the company's health-insurance portal — something to do with how policyholders disputed denied claims. The product manager led the meeting. Everyone seemed to know what they were talking about.

Ishita understood almost nothing.

Not because the people in the room were speaking a different language. They were speaking English. But every third sentence contained a word she could not place. TPA. Endorsement. Sum insured versus sum assured. Cashless versus reimbursement. Sub-limit. Co-pay. Pre-existing condition waiting period. IRDAI guidelines on grievance redressal. Claim-rejection ratio. She heard the words. She could not feel the weight of them. She did not know which ones were technical terms with precise meanings and which ones were loose shorthand. She did not know which decisions being made in the room were small and reversible and which ones were constrained by a regulator she had never read.

She sat for ninety minutes, took notes she could not interpret, and walked back to her desk with the specific, almost physical feeling of being an outsider in a room full of insiders. Not because anyone had excluded her. Because she did not have the map.

After the meeting, a senior engineer named Prakash sat down beside her and said something she did not expect. He said: "The first time I sat in that meeting, I understood even less than you did. Here is what I did about it." He opened a notebook and showed her a single page, handwritten, with five headings. Under each heading were a few words.
